Todeva's house

About us

Welcome to Todd's House! It was built in 1864 Mr. by the master builder from Bansko usta Gligor Blago Doyov, the same one who built the Church of the Holy Trinity and the bell tower to it. The house bears the name of its first owner - Kir Nikola Lazarov Todev.

The house has two floors. It is built with massive granite and marble hewn stones, lime mortar and wood.
The bottom floor, facing the street, was occupied by two shop premises. He worked on a version, which we understand from the several notebooks, that we store. The inscription on most of them is: "Some day (every day) pusola (diary) of the versions of the Todeva shop". Each notebook has a start date, to which he is registered. People's names are written inside, what item they purchased, the date and day of shopping. The premises were later converted into a pub, and now functions as a tavern. (Photo of the facade)

On the second floor are the living quarters, which are accessed from a spacious open veranda. (Photo of the veranda)

Let's take a peek into one of the rooms – the most beautifully illustrated, with frescoes and a carved ceiling (photos). The ceiling is wooden, shaped like an octagon. The main element in it is the openwork rosette, which we call the sun, whose fiery rays are directed to all directions of the world. The heart of the sun includes a composition of olive branches, intertwining like a wreath and blooming flowers set in two concentric circles with lace trim. Eight items follow, representing leaves and bunches. All this is surrounded by a white belt of lime plaster. The plaster itself is also interesting. It is not flat, and is shaped like a vault. At the four ends of the ceiling are triangular "pillows" with an intricate braid of intertwining stripes.
Except for the carving on the ceiling, this room impresses with its frescoes. All four walls are painted. The drawings include baroque foliate compositions, vases with flowers, birds, garlands and plant stalks. The predominant colors are Turkish blue, tile red and yellow. The windows, as well as those of all the other rooms, are covered with gratings of thick round iron.
There is a hiding place in the house. It is built like a tower, which can guarantee the safety of the family for days in the event of an attack. All four walls are built of large hewn granite blocks. The walls are thick over 80 cm. On the ceiling there are approx 40 cm. thick pavement of large stones. In this way, the fire resistance of the entire room is ensured. The door, from which the hideout is entered, is metal, with dimensions 125 cm x 90 cm and the thickness 2 cm (Photo). It is made of two iron sheets, joined with large rivets. It is equipped with a massive lock and additionally with two matches. There are holes in the walls – fighters (mitirizi). One defends the door, and the other – the window, closing also with metal lids.
The yard from the street is surrounded by almost 4 meter high wall (Wall).
The house has been declared a cultural monument. It is open to visitors, entrance free.
